AHIMA in partnership with Alabama State University and Tougaloo College is now offering a series of courses to introduce professionals to the transition of paper medical records to electronic health records (EHRs). Courses are 12-weeks long, and designed for individuals working in industries affected by EHRs.

This 12-week online course will explore:

• EHR implementation knowledge
• Planning, analysis and implementation related to EHR
• Hands on experience with health information management and technology

This course will prepare participants to:

• Identify the key characteristics of healthcare reform
• Have hands on experience and marketability for health information management and technology jobs
• Apply privacy and security concepts within the healthcare arena
• Implement EHR knowledge
• Expand expertise in planning, analysis, and implementation related to the EHR

Once a course is completed, students will be well versed in EHR and the key characteristics of healthcare reform.

This course has been developed through an award from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health (Prime Award # 1 CPIMP091054-03) to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the AHIMA Foundation has been issued a sub-award (# 68141-AHIMA-03) to partner with Universities/ Community Colleges to offer this educational opportunity under the project entitled:  “Manpower Training in Electronic Health Record (EHR) Use through Community Colleges in the Delta Region”. EHR Privacy, Security & Health Information Exchange (HIE)

This 12-week online course will explore:

• Introductory to the ARRA, HIPAA and HITECH Acts as well as Meaningful Use (MU) and Health Information Exchange (HIE)
• Issues faced by healthcare organizations as they comply with new regulations
• Implication strategies and challenges likely to be encountered while maintaining privacy and security in HIM

This course will prepare participants to:

• Identify the key characteristics of healthcare reform
• Assure compliance with regulatory requirements in the health record management process
• Explain the terminology used by healthcare professionals when addressing ARRA, HIPAA, HITECH, MU and HIE
• Summarize ARRA, HITECH, HIPAA, MU and HIE’s regulations that govern the release of protected health information (PHI)
• Explain the role of the healthcare professional in assuring privacy and security of health information within the healthcare setting

Once a course is completed, students will be well versed in EHR and the key characteristics of healthcare reform.

NEW for Fall 2013! 

This 12-week online course teaches central concepts related to system analysis, design and workflow. In order to function in today's integrated health information environment, healthcare professionals must understand concepts such as the system development life cycle. The ability to use workflow analysis tools such as flowcharts, swimlane diagrams, use cases, etc. is critical to meet user needs. Database design concepts are also covered in this course. Project management skills are covered in order to ensure students can effectively ascertain an organized approach to implementing integrated health information systems.

• Recognize the importance of the system development life cycle
• Understand the significance of a feasibility study
• Understand the role of project management in system design 
• Understand systematic framework that shows factors that could impact system performance, and use it to identify and assess impacts of different types of factors 
• Learn about the four main methods used to collect information: interviewing, questionnaires, direct observation, and analyzing
